Over 1,000 have already crossed illegally into Guatemala.
Young men and women carrying backpacks and small children are among the more than 1,000 Honduran migrants that have formed a caravan in hopes of reaching the U.S. Some were held up at the Honduran border post of Corinto, where Guatemalan authorities attempted to prevent them from entering by asking they provide proof they did not have the coronavirus.
But more than 1,000 have illegally crossed into Guatemala, immigration authorities there said.
Central America, like much of the world, has experienced months of economic chaos wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 2,000 people in Honduras have died from the virus.
“We want to pass, we want to pass,” the migrants shouted at Guatemalan officials. One young man said, “We want to pass peacefully; we don’t want conflicts but we are determined to reach the United States.” He added, “In Honduras there is nothing, there is no work and you cannot live.”
